Some of the benefits of hot yoga can be gained by going to a sauna.  Dry sauna with cold showers before, during and after vs. wet sauna.  However we will address Hot Yoga from the standpoint of what to be aware of. 

Hot yoga is not for the faint of heart.  It is intense, HOT and requires serious hydration to prepare.  My first sweat lodge with the Lokota out West after one round gave me a headache and I had to leave the tent.  My college professor had brought me and introduced me to this amazing spiritual practice, thank you Skip! A sweat lodge is HOT and so is hot yoga.  Different, entirely, however principally both require hydrating before and after.  

Now hot yoga tends to be taken by a healthy percent of  people who like to drink a bit.  It helps them “sweat it out.”  I am not knocking drinking, I have been off liquor for over 11 years and not returning.  However there is a correlation.  To be hydrated, which drinking alcohol does not help with, before taking a hot yoga class is an important preventative measure for health reasons. 

 Hot yoga is often associated with styles like Bikram, the hot approach to the ancient practice of yoga. Conducted in a heated room, typically ranging between 90 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit, hot yoga suggests a multitude of benefits that range from the physical to the psychological. Here are some of the suggested benefits hot yoga touts:

  1. Enhanced Flexibility: The warmth of the room makes the muscles more pliable, facilitating a deeper stretch without causing strain. This means practitioners can achieve poses with a greater range of motion, leading to improved flexibility over time.  However we feel the poses move quickly and would be better served if held longer. 
  2. Intense Detoxification: Sweating is inevitable in hot yoga, and with it comes the flushing out of toxins from the body. This detoxification process at the skin level, combined with the internal detox resulting from the poses, leads to a comprehensive cleansing of the system.  And if you have a lot of toxins and are new this combination can result in feeling sick. 
  3. Strengthened Immune System: The combination of heat and exercise can bolster the immune system. The body becomes more adept at fighting germs, and the elevated body temperature can create an inhospitable environment for pathogens.  And the immune system needs to be reset all together if not working as the endocrine is the ruler, so no matter what actions are being taken if the immune system is shut down, it ain’t gonna magically work because you sweat.  The body is taxed when practicing which can weaken your immune system. Unless your health is strong, be cautious. 
  4. Improved Cardiovascular Health: The heart pumps more vigorously to circulate blood and cool the body in the heated environment. This cardiovascular workout can strengthen the heart, improve circulation, and increase metabolic rate.  All this is beneficial if you do not have heart issues or palpitations.  
  5. Mental Resilience and Focus: Holding a pose or flowing through sequences in the heated ambiance requires not just physical, but mental endurance. Over time, practitioners develop increased mental resilience, concentration, and a sharper focus.  When the mind, breathe, and physical can connect (which requires a slower practice) this is true. 
  6. Stress Relief and Mood Enhancement: Hot yoga stimulates the production of endorphins, the body’s natural mood enhancers. The meditative aspects of yoga, coupled with the physical exertion, can help in reducing anxiety, stress, and even symptoms of depression.  However meditation while moving is only effective if there has been self mastery of the self-hypnosis over time to be present in action.  
  7. Enhanced Skin Health: The profuse sweating opens up the pores, aiding in the elimination of impurities and dead skin cells. This results in a radiant, clearer complexion post-session.  To make that statement viable, dry brushing the body with an all natural material to open the skin to let out toxins is a good prerequisite to the practice.
